Pilot whales stranded on Tasmanian beach

About 80 pilot whales have stranded on rocks on Tasmania's remote west coast, authorities say. The mass stranding comes a week after more than 50 pilot whales perished near Stanley in a mass stranding on the state's north-west coast.

State government spokesman Warwick Brennan said the stranding was discovered about
10.30am (AEDT) on Saturday.
A reconnaissance helicopter has flown over the area and it will take a team of about
10 whale rescuers until Sunday to reach the pod.
"It appears at this stage the majority of the whales are dead," Mr Brennan said.
"Possibly 11 whales are still alive but they've all been battered about on the rocks."
Mr Brennan said due to the difficult beach terrain grave fears are held about being
able to save the surviving whales.
