ASIAN COUNTRIES SHOULD JOIN FORCES TO OVERCOME CRISIS

Jakarta, Nov 28 (ANTARA) - Asian countries should immediately muster their internal strengths to rise from the current global economic crisis, House of Representatives (DPR) Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Board (BKSAP) chairman Abdillah Toha said here on Friday.
Asked on the sidelines of an ongoing Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) forum, Toha said the countries in Asia should be no longer adhere to a world economic system that was in reality brittle and unstable.
"APA should mobilize the strength of Asian countries and take part in the regulation of the world financial system, and Indonesia will take the initiative to build up Asian economic power," Toha said.
He said Asian countries had the capability to play an important role in the international world at present and in the future.
"Most of the world's foreign exchange reserves is in the hands of Asian countries. There is US$3 trillion in Asia. But the amount is not circulated evenly in the Asian region," Toha said, adding that part of the foreign exchange reserves in Asia was circulated outside the region, while trade and investment relations among Asian countries were still weak.
"Asian countries most often invest in and establish trade relations with countries outside the region. Therefore, most of the money from Asia circulates outside the region," said the politician from the National Mandate Party (PAN).
Meanwhile, Hose Speaker Agung Laksono said on Thursday that Asian countries could play a role in reviving the world economy by overcoming the impact of the global financial crisis on trade and production in a number of countries.
Speaking at the opening of the third Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) meeting at the legislative building on Thursday, Laksono said the global economic crisis, triggered by a banking and financial meltdown, should be overcome immediately.
Otherwise it would create a massive economic tsunami in all other sectors of life in many more countries around the world.
Laksono said the crisis should be overcome by all countries, especially the developed countries.
