JAKARTA-BANGKOK FLIGHTS STILL ON HOLD
Jakarta, Nov 28 (ANTARA) - Jakarta-Bangkok flights remained unavailable until Friday noon or two days after the closure of Bangkok's Swarnabhumi airport on Wednesday (Nov. 26), an airport official said.
"There are still no flights on the route," Soekarno-Hatta airport administrator Herry Bhakti said here on Friday.
Herry said the Jakarta-Bangkok route was normally served by PT Garuda Indonesia, Air Asia and Thai Airways.
Since Swarabhumi airport was still closed, all flights to Bangkok of the three airlines were automatically still canceled, he said.
He said he could not yet predict when the flights could be resumed or return to normal.
Previously, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal announced that all airports in Indonesia were open for airplanes serving international routes to land if they could not land at Swarnabhumi airport.
National airlines were advised to call off their flights to Bangkok for the time being pending Bangkok airport's reopening.
Swarnabhumi airport is now occupied by anti- as well as pro-government demonstrators. The Thai government had decided to temporarily close the airport.
Hundreds of people with airline tickets to Bangkok, Thailand, were stranded at Jakarts's Soekarno-Hatta airport on Wednesday as all flights to the Thai capital were canceled following the occupation of Swarnabhumi airport by the demonstrators.
Most of the stranded people held Garuda Indonesia and Thai Airways tickets. Hundreds of airline passengers from Indonesia were also reported stranded in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where they were on transit to Bangkok.
The Soekarno-Hatta airport administrator could not give any confirmation as when Bankok's airport would reopen for flights.
"We will let passengers depart as soon as we know Swarnabhumi airport is open again," Herry Bakti, chief administrator of Soekarno-Hatta airport, said.
