Pak says Mumbai attacks barbaric, offers "complete cooperation"
Islamabad/New Delhi, Nov 27 (PTI) Denouncing the "barbaric" terror strikes in Mumbai, Pakistan Thursday offered its "complete cooperation" to India in fighting the menace as it stressed the need for "revisiting" the bilateral strategies to deal with the problem.
Cautioning against any "knee-jerk" reaction, Islamabad
favoured strengthening of the joint Anti-Terror Mechanism and
greater linkages between intelligence agencies of the two
countries to prevent such incidents.
In a statement, President Asif Ali Zardari condemned
the attacks in Mumbai and stressed the need for taking "strict
measures to eradicate terrorism and extremism".
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani sought "concerted
efforts" to make the region a peaceful place to live in.
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who is in India
on a four-day visit, said "no civilised society can tolerate
such barbaric incidents."
"I am shocked and horrified at the Mumbai incidents," he
told PTI. "I assure the Indian government of our complete
cooperation and support," he said, adding "We will have to
join all our resources to fight the menace. The Joint Anti
Terror Mechanism needs to be strengthened further. It needs to
meet frequently."
Qureshi, who held talks with External Affairs Minister
Pranab Mukherjee yesterday, said he had stressed the need for
greater linkages and connect between intelligence agencies so
that they can share information to prevent such incidents.
Noting that India and Pakistan are both victims of
terrorism, he said "we will have to revisit our strategies for
peace and security of the region."
"We have to develop a better understanding. Let us not
jump to conclusions, let us not go in for knee jerk reactions.
The Samjhauta incident very clearly indicates that we have to
be cautious in our expressions," the Minister said in
Chandigarh.
"Pakistan wants friendly relations with India and we
today have a common enemy which is extremism and terrorism. It
is not local or regional phenomena. Terrorism is a global
challenge and we have to poll in our resources. We have to
jointly fight these," Qureshi said.
"We have mechanism in place, we have joint
anti-terrorism mechanism in place. We need to further
strengthen it and exchange ideas how we go about in dealing
with this menace," he said.
On reports that the terrorists, suspected to have
reached the shores of Mubai by boats, Qureshi said "Did you
see that boat? Can one travel on that boat from Karachi to
Mumbai.
"I think that media should be supportive and they
should not be negative. It is too early to jump to
conclusions. Let the investigation take place. What I want to
assure you is that we will cooperate."
"We often jump to conclusion and cut a sorry figure.
Lets not do that. We should learn from past mistakes,"Qureshi
told reporters after arriving in Chandigarh to attend an
international conference on cooperative development, peace and
security in South Asia organised by Centre for Research in
Rural and Infrastructure Development. PTI SUN DDC
