'Nisha' leaves trail of destruction

Chennai, Nov 27 (PTI) Over 60 people were killed and thousands rendered homeless as the cyclonic storm, Nisha, crossed the Tamil Nadu coast between Nagapattinam and Karaikal on Thursday.

Normal life was thrown out of gear all over the state
due to the incessant rain during the past three days.

Disaster rescue force of the Tamil Nadu police swung
into action to rescue marooned people in over 100 villages in
Nagapttinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Cuddalore districts,
which faced the fury of the cyclone.

The Met office has forecast more rains for the next 24
hours in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry beginning 0830 hrs, despite
the cyclone weakening.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced Rs 100 crore for
immediate relief measures across the state.

He had deputed his ministers to the rain-hit districts
to co-ordinate relief works and also instructed collectors to
take immediate relief measures. Officials were also working
round-the-clock to close breaches in water bodies.

In Chennai, Traffic snarls were witnessed as vehicles
got stuck in water. The government had declared holiday for
schools and colleges. However office-goers had a tough time
as they had to reach their place of work. Chennai Collector
Mythili Rajendran announced holiday for schools in the city
on Friday also.

Chembarambakkam reservoir, one of the prime drinking
water resources for Chennai, was full and surplus water was
being let in the Adyar river.

Meanwhile, a report from Nagapattinam said that eight
persons had died in rain-related incidents over the last few
days. A total of one lakh hectares of 'samba' paddy was
submerged and 3,000 hectares of 'kaladi' crop partially
damaged. Most rivers in the district were in spate.

In Vedaranyam 20 country craft anchored at the shore
broke free and drifted to sea, while in Kodaikarai 10 fibre
glass boats were damaged, official sources said.

At Tarangambadi, the famous 16th century Danish fort
Dansborg was surrounded by water.

All areas in Nagapattinam district were reported heavy
rains with Vedaranyam recording the highest rainfall of 40.8
cm, followed by Tirupoondi 30.9 cm, Thalinayar 24.2 cm,
Mayavaram 14.5 cm and Nagapattinam 11.2 cm in the last 24
hours ending 0830 hrs (IST) Thursday. Chennai city recorded 13
cm rainfall.

In Puducherry, which also faced heavy rains, Chief
Minister V Vaithlingam said the government had already started
distributing 10 kilos of rice and two litres kerosene to all
families under Below Poverty Line category.

He said a detailed report on the rain havoc in
Puducherry and Karaikal was being prepared and would be
submitted to the Union Home Ministry on Friday seeking relief.
