RI HOUSE SPEAKER ELECTED APA PRESIDENT

Jakarta, Nov 27 (ANTARA) - Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Chairman Agung Laksono was elected president of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) for a two-year period at the assembly's 3rd session here on Thursday.

Agung was elected by acclamation to the post at the session at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), participated in by 250 parliamentary delegates from 31 countries.

The session was also attended by observers among others from the Asean Parliament, the Inter Parliamentary Union, the Eurasian Economic Community (EEC), and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).

Agung replaced Ali Larijani who is also chairman of the Iranian parliament. Ali was elected APA president when the assembly convened its second session in Tehran a few years ago.

Ali expressed hope that under Agung's chairmanship, APA would be able to become a strong and effective organization in fostering cooperation among and achieving the common goals of Asian countries.

Shortly after being elected to the post, Agung led a general debate at the assembly's session.

At the general debate, each of the delegations came up with general views related to actual issues, such as the global financial crisis, energy utilization, culture and the environment.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono opened the assembly's 3rd session at the Pustaka Loka room at the parliament building here earlier in the day.

Following the opening ceremony, chiefs of the delegations to the meeting planted trees in the parliament building compound as part of one-million tree planting campaigns in Asia.

The main theme of the assembly's session is seeking solution to the current global financial crisis. Therefore, the event's organizing committe has decided to invite relevant government officials such as the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs/Finance Minister Sri Mulyani to the meeting.
