-PARLIAMENT SPEAKER TOPTAN RECEIVES CHINIESE OFFICIAL

ANKARA (A.A) - 27.11.2008 - The Speaker of Turkish Parliament, Koksal Toptan, received the chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Jia Qinglin, and an accompanying delegation in Ankara on Thursday.
Toptan and Qinglin held a tete-a-tete meeting that lasted 15 minutes and the two leaders later proceeded to the meeting between the Turkish and Chinese delegations.
Speaking to reporters at the parliament, Toptan said that Turkey and China were two friendly countries based on economic and cultural relations.
"China sits at the far east corner of Asia while Turkey sits at the far west corner of Asia. The geographical distance could not be an obstacle before close relations with China. Our political and commercial ties with China are excellent. The trade volume of 14 billion USD is against Turkey. We are trying to establish a balance in commercial relations with China," Toptan said.
"China extended full support to Turkey for getting elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. We believe that Turkey and China, as members of the UN Security Council, will work together in the next two years to the benefit of whole humanity," Toptan said.
Stressing that relations between the parliaments of Turkey and China were excellent, Toptan said that 384 Turkish deputies out of a total of 546 were members of the Turkish-Chinese Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group.
"This is a record participation from the Turkish parliament," Toptan also said.
Qinglin, in his part, said that traditional friendship between Turkey and China was very strong.
"The Silk Road connected the two countries strongly for more than 1,000 years," Qinglin said.
"Relations between Turkey and China continue without any problems. The Chinese government pays high priority to relations with Turkey," Qinglin said.
"I would like to make suggestions to promote relations. Firstly, we must increase political contacts. Secondly, we must understand the mutual interests of each other. It is the common duty of our respective countries to fight against separatists and international terrorism. And, thirdly, we must develop economic and commercial relations," Qinglin said.
Reminding that there was a procurement delegation accompanying him in Ankara, Qinlin said that "a procurement agreement worth 200 million USD may be signed during the current visit to Ankara. We encourage strong and reliable Chinese companies to invest in Turkey".
