ASIAN PARLIAMENTS URGED TO OVERCOME GLOBAL CRISIS TOGETHER

Jakarta, Nov 27 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono has called on Asian parliaments to overcome the global financial crisis together.

"The solution of the crisis should be our common concern, especially the developed countries," Laksono said in his address at the third Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) at the Nusantara-IV building on the House's premises here on Thursday.

Laksono who replaced Ali Larijani of the Iranian parliament as APA president, said the recent G-20 meeting in Washington DC should be welcomed as an important forum to promote dialog between advanced and emerging countries on key issues around economic growth and stability of the financial system.

He said the forum had produced a number of commitments to overcoming the financial crisis by among other things supporting developing countries with funding through stimuli such as liquidity support facilities and programs.

However, Laksono added, the results of the G-20 forum were still in the form of agreements which should be followed up at the next meetings to make more concrete implementation programs.

"The world community continues to wait and monitor sustainable economic development, especially the crisis-hit developing countries," Laksono said.

In relation with the global crisis, Indonesia as the host country of the third APA meeting had proposed it be themed "Asia and New Global Financial Architecture Demand."
"The theme will be the central issue in a public debate and a Jakarta Declaration which is to be issued at the end of the meeting," Laksono said.

The APA meeting was officially opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and attended by a number of foreign countries' ambassadors and cabinet ministers.

Laksono said issues related to corruption eradication in Asia, poverty eradication, environment, and cultural diversity in Asia would be discussed in the third APA meeting.

The issue of global warming would also be discussed in the meeting.
