HOUSE SPEAKER: APA NEEDS TO HELP BOOST ENERGY SECURITY IN ASIA
Jakarta, Nov. 27 (ANTARA) - Members of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) should boost the development of energy security for the sustainability of development in the region, according to Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Agung Laksono.
When speaking in the opening of the third plenary session of APA at Parliament Building here on Thursday, Laksono called on APA members to anticipate an over consumption of energy in the world.
The demand for energy would significantly increase in accordance with the development of the real sector, he said before 219 participants of 28 parliaments attending the plenary session.
He said that the APA members needed not save the energy usage especially amid the current global financial crisis.
The House Speaker also emphasized the need to intensify food production in line with the food security in respective APA member countries.
The APA plenary session is scheduled to also discuss the environment issues such as on climate change and global warming.
The APA meeting was officially opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and attended by a number of ministers and foreign ambassadors.
The president in his address called on Asian countries to be in the front line of the world's financial system reform because Asia would be the center of world economic growth in the aftermath of economic slowdown in the United States and Europe.
He also called on Asian leaders to make a breakthrough in Doha Round in December 2008.
