POLICE NOT TO TOLERATE 'MORNING STAR' FLAG RAISING ON DECEMBER 1

Jayapura, Nov 27 (ANTARA) - Papua Police chief Insp.Gen. Bagus Eko Danto said he would not tolerate the raising of the "bintang kejora" (morning star) flag of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) on the separatist movement's anniversary on December 1, 2008 anywhere in the province.

"I will not allow any group of people to raise the bintang kejora flag on December 1," Eko Danto said here on Thursday.

He said a group of people in Puncak Jaya district had asked the police for permission to hoist the flag on December 1 but the request was rejected.

Asked about reports that bintang kejora flags were still seen flying in Puncak Jaya district, Eko Danto said they had been lowered by local authorities.

"Police and military officers have checked the area where the flags were seen flying but learned they had been taken down," the police chief said.

Last September 23, 2008, three people in Timika hoisted the separatist flag before dozens of others in a street in the town's Kwamki Baru sub district.

The flag fluttered for about 15 minutes before it was lowered and confiscated by police who also nabbed 18 people along with a number of self-made sharp weapons.

Seven of the 18 arrested people were identified as Arnold Toto, Ike Lamordean, Agustinung Timang, Agus Aim, Albertus Alomang, Benny Yanem, Alpinus Kalaneyane, and Apiator Onawame.

According to Wikipedia free encyclopedia, the morning star flag represented the territory of West New Guinea from December 1,1961 until October 1,1962 when the territory came under administration of the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA).

The flag is commonly used by the West Papuan population including OPM supporters to rally self-determination, human rights support and is usually raised on December 1 each year in defiance of Indonesian laws.

The flag consists of a red vertical band along the hoist side, with a white five-pointed star in the center. The flag was for the first time raised on December 1, 1961 and used until the United Nations became the territory`s administrator on October 1,1962.
