FLASH FLOOD LEAVES ONE DEAD IN PALEMBANG

Palembang, Nov 27 (ANTARA) - A flash flood triggered by days of torrential rains in South Sumatran city of Palembang on Wednesday killed at least one person and inundated hundreds of homes in dozens of villages.

The fatality was identified as Jutawan (15) who drowned after falling into Bendung river in Sekip area at 11 on Wednesday morning, but his body was discovered by rescue workers at 9 on Thursday morning.

Jutawan's mother, Maryati, said the body of her son had been sent to Palembang Public Hospital for an autopsy.

Maryati said the flood had affected several areas in Palembang for almost a month, especially the low-lying area along the Musi River banks.

Environmentalists have blamed massive deforestation caused by illegal logging activities and claimed that the floods and landslides in various regions in Indonesia occurred after water-catchment areas above villages and towns were destroyed by deforestation.
