PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO OPENS APA MEETING

Jakarta, Nov 27 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono opened the third Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) at Legislative Nusantara-IV building here on Thursday.

The APA meeting was also attended by 210 participants from 25 parliaments in Asian countries and three other parliaments of other countries as observers.

APA is a regional organization of Asian countries' parliaments. At present it has 39 member countries that meet once a year. It has 17 parliament experts and two international organizations.

APA is originally from the Association of Asian Parliamentary for Peace and Cooperation (AAPC) which then changed to the Association of Asian Parliamentary for Peace (AAPP) which was approved in 1999 in Bangladesh.

The formation of AAPP was initiated by the Bangladeshi Parliament and supported by the Philippines, Iran, and Indonesia.

At the 7th meeting of AAPP in Tehran in 2006, AAPP was transformed into APA. To date, APA has held two meetings in Tehran in 2006 and 2007.

In its second meeting in 2007, Indonesia was appointed to host the third meeting on November 27-29, 2008 to discuss various issues such as economy, energy, sustainable development, politics, social, and culture in Asian region.

In his opening address, House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono said a new global financial structure would be the main topic of discussion in the third APA meeting.

Agung said the outcome of the discussion would be formulated into Jakarta Declaration at the end of the meeting on November 29, 2008.
