PROTON DISTRIBUTOR TARGETS TO SELL OVER 5,000 CARS IN EGYPT ANNUALLY
From Mahanum Abdul Aziz
CAIRO, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Ezz Elarab Automotive Group, the distributor for Proton cars in Egypt, is targeting to sell over 5,000 units annually by 2010 from about 2,000 unit currently.
Proton is the Malaysian national automobile manufacturer (Malay acronym for
PeRusahaan OTOmobil Nasional or English: 'National Automobile
Enterprise').
Its president Hesham Ezz Elarab, in stating the target, said the company
was bullish on the demand for Proton cars in the country with the latest launch
of the Proton Persona.
"Proton Persona is an ideal car for the Egyptian market. It is a good car
and the price is quite reasonable. We believe the model will achieve a sales of
200 units a month," he told Malaysian reporters here Wednesday.
The company, he said, had already sold about 500 units of the model
so
far.
He also believe the Proton Persona will become the top-selling Proton model
in the country with hold four to five percent share of Egypt's automotive market
in the next two years.
Hesham said the group started distributing Proton cars in 2004 and managed
to sell about 400 units in the first year.
To date, the group has 10 dealers for Proton together with two showrooms
and three service centres, he said.
Hesham also said that there were opportunities to increase Proton car sales
in Egypt and the group had invested US$5 million to build a new sales, service
and spare parts centre for Proton cars.
The centre is expected to be launched in June next year, he said.
"We start selling Proton's cars four years ago and this is the right time
to expand our facilities," he added.
Hesham said the 1.6-litre passenger car received strong demand in Egypt
after the government reduced the duty import to 40 percent in 2005 for cars in
and below the 1.6-litre category.
According to him, the total vehicle sales in Egypt last year stood at
257,000 units.
Out of this, about 200,000 units were passenger cars with 70 percent of
them from the 1.6-litre category, he said.
