Lubna Al-Qasimi receives Belgian MPs
Abu Dhabi, Nov 26, 2008 (WAM) - Foreign Trade Minister, Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, received yesterday at her office a visiting delegation from the European Affairs Committee of the Belgian Parliament.
Sheikha Lubna briefed the delegation about the UAE, its economy and success in its economic diversification programme. She said the UAE's economy had witnessed great development last year, recording high growth rate in all socio-economic sectors, adding that the non-oil sector accounted for more than 64% of the GDP, while the UAE has become a major investment hub for foreign invest and international firms.
She pointed out that the UAE was striving to further boost the services sector which is witnessing rapid growth among the non-oil sector. She said the UAE's economic strategy aims at raising the economic growth rate, boosting the GDP and strengthening further the role of the non-oil sectors.
Sheikha Lubna also touched on the UAE's social aspects, citing the spirit of tolerance and peaceful coexistence that reign high among the 182 nationalities living and working in the country, the proactive administrative, social and political roles women play in the country, and the UAE's continuous efforts to boost women empowerment. She noted that women now represent 22% of members of the UAE parliament (the Federal National Council) and occupy four seats in the UAE cabinet.
Sheikha Lubna later took some questions from the delegation and gave them detailed answers to their satisfaction.
The delegation expressed satisfaction on the level of relations between the UAE and their country.
Hala Lootah, Director of Government Communications at the ministry and the Belgian Ambassador were present at the meeting.
