DFWAC launches awareness activities for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Dubai, Nov 26, 2008 (WAM) - As the world's non-profit organizations, women associations, governments and various entities commemorate on Tuesday 25th November 2008, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children (DFWAC) has started a number of activities that aim at raising awareness about the issue.

Since its inception, the Foundation has been partnering with the community, stakeholders, and international and regional entities to help protect the women who fall victims of violence with a view to eventually contribute to eliminating violence against women, one step at a time.

DFWAC has set a special booth at Sharjah University to display and sell work of the abuse victims currently sheltered at the Foundation. Hand crafted accessories such as hair clips, handbags, hats and ceramics made by victims will be sold. This gives the silent victims a voice, a creative outlet, pride in their work, a sense of accomplishment, and empower them to get back on their feet. At the booth, brochures, leaflets and booklets will be handed out to inform the public about issues of human trafficking, domestic violence, and child abuse and the various support services the foundation offers.

Afra Albasti says, 'We work diligently everyday on behalf of women, but today is a day to pause, reflect, and raise our voices on behalf of those who don't have a voice. The work at the foundation is ongoing and although today is a day of awareness, the DFWAC's goal is for the community altogether to stand up against violence, for the safety of all women all around the world'.

In an ongoing effort to create links, resources, and opportunities for training and collaboration with international entities, the DFWAC has partnered with Texas to further enhance the services and support for abused women. The Foundation hosts this week one of the key representatives from the University of Texas, Noel Busch - Armendariz, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of the Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, to provide specialized training. The sessions will take place at the Dubai Courts with the participation of the Health Department and the Dubai Police to discuss cooperation and implementation of best practices.

According to the UN, 'By resolution 54/134 of 17 December 1999, the General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and invited governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities designated to raise public awareness of the problem on that day. Women's activists have marked 25 November as a day against violence since 1981. This date came from the brutal assassination in 1960, of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic, on orders of Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961)'.

The DFWAC has also been participating actively in conferences that delve into the protocols and best practices to protect trafficked persons. Afra Al Basti, CEO of the DFWAC attended recently an international conference in Chisinau, Moldova and a regional and International Conference on Comparative UPR Experience Past, Present, and Future in Bahrain to discuss the implementation theories and practices for the protection of trafficked persons.

On the national and international levels, DFWAC plays an active role in sharing its knowledge and experience in the field of sheltering and direct care services to victims of abuse, including its recent participation at the opening of the Abu Dhabi Shelter for the Victims of Human Trafficking and the shelter in Kazakhstan.
