Pakistani Sikh killed in tribal area

Islamabad, Nov 25 (PTI) A member of Pakistan's minority Sikh community, Sardar Balwant Singh, was kidnapped from the northwestern city of Peshawar and later killed in a restive tribal area where criminal gangs and the local Taliban are active.

Political authorities in the semi-autonomous Khyber
tribal region found the body of Singh, a Sikh 'hakeem' (herbal
doctor) in the Jamrud area. He was kidnapped by a group of
armed men in Peshawar two days ago.

The kidnapping has sparked panic and fear in Peshawar's
small Sikh community. Singh was often visited by people from
all faiths for his herbal medicines.

Criminal gangs that carry out kidnappings for ransom and
the Pakistani Taliban are active in Khyber Agency.

Haji Gul Jan, an officer of the political administration
in Jamrud, told the Daily Times newspaper said Singh's body
had been handed over to his family. Singh's killers have not
yet been identified, officials said. PTI RHL
