HOUSE URGED TO FINISH DELIBERATIONS ON CORRUPTION COURT BILL
Jakarta, Nov 24 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono has called on legislators to give priority to the corruption court bill in their deliberations , saying the public was waiting for it.
"I hope that the Bill on (formation of a) Corruption Court will be given priority as part of our commitment to fighting corruption," the House Speaker said in a speech to open the second sitting of the House here on Monday.
He said while the law was being awaited by the public, the Constitutional Court (MK) had also mentioned in one of its decisions that a corruption court should have been set up by the end of 2009.
Laksono admitted that deliberations on the bill had not yet been completed so that the House Speaker had reminded the special committee on the corruption court (Pansus Tipikor) of the need to give priority to discussion of the bill.
"If not completed soon we are afraid we will face a time constraint in view of the fact that next year there will be a legislative election on April 9, which will be followed by a presidential election," Laksono said.
Monday's plenary session was the first of the House's second sitting. Laksono said in the current second sitting , the DPR would have the task of discussing 51 of the 79 bills the House had programmed.
Some of them were now urgently needed such as the bill on the Second Amendment to the Law on the Supreme Court, the bill on the Amendment to the Law on the Judicial Commission, the bill on the Status and Composition of the DPR and the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), the bill on Tipikor, the bill on Aviation and the bill on Traffic.
He said the DPR had endorsed 141 laws during its first sitting. It was expected that at the end of the DPR's 2004-2009 term , it would finish about 60 to 70 percent of its 2005-2009 national legislation program.
