N SULAWESI PEOPLE ADVISED TO STOP CONSUMING IMPORTED GOODS
Manado, N Sulawesi, Nov 24 (ANTARA) - A North Sulawesi economist, Prof Indriaty Najoan-Pondang SE MSI, has suggested that people in the province stop consuming imported products and instead prefer using local products.
"The conditions we wiili face as a consequence of the global financial crisis will be very difficult but one way to weather them is cutting consumption of imported products," she said here Monday.
It was time for the Indonesian people, including people in North Sulawesi, to use local products as they were now equal in quality to imports, she said.
In the matter of food, she said, it was better to consume products of local farmers or of those in other parts of Indonesia, the lecturer at the Economic Faculty of Sam Ratulangi University said.
By consuming local products, the people would be more able to survive the crisis-related economic difficulties which were expected to occur in the middle of 2009, she said.
"We will experience the impact of the global financial crisis in mid-2009 but we cannot not estimate the extent of the impact right now. Therefore, we must be prepared to weather the storm if it finally happens," Indriarty said.
Meanwhile, an executive of the Manado office of Bank Indonesia (the central bank), Jefferey Kairupan, said the people, the government, the business community and other stakeholders should prepare themselves for the worst in facing the impact of the global crisis.
Kairupan, a monetary expert who represented Bank Indonesia at a meeting of central banks in the world in New York in mid- October, said the current US financial crisis would impact on Indonesia in different way than the Asian financial meltdown in 1998, because it was affecting all countries.
Therefore, what should be done now was to strengthen the local economy early on , he said.
He noted North Sulawesi people were among those who liked consuming imported products, and thus from now on they had better begin to give priority to goods produced by local farmers and industries.
