SALARY OF CERTIFIED TEACHERS AND LUCTURERS TO BE RAISED AS OF JANUARY 2009

Makassar, Nov 24 (ANTARA) - The salary of certified teachers and lecturers who have devoted much of their time in remote or hinterland regions of the country will be raised starting in January 2009.

Teachers who have pocketed certification will have their salaries increased by 100 percent, and lecturers 200 percent, Indroyono Susilo, secretary of the People's Welfare Coordinating Ministry told the press here on Monday.
If the basic salary of a teacher stands at Rp2 million, he or she will receive an extra Rp4 million every month.

A lecturer who has pocketed certification will have his or her salary rainsed by 200 percent , he said after accompanying South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo who opened a seminar on bureaucracy reforms at Sahid Hotel in Makassar.

Without mentioning the the names of the teachers and lecturers who have pocketed certification, Indroyono said the step taken by the government was aimed at improving the living standard of qualified teachers and lecturers.

In order to produce qualified teachers, certified teaching staff at all educational levels should be qualified in their respective fields, he said.
In the meantime, Governor Syarul Yasin Limpo said improving the living standard and health of teachers was a priority of his administration.
