DEMOCRACY SUCCEEDS IN AZERBAIJAN THANKS TO PRESIDENT ALIYEV, TERRY DAVIS, COUNCIL OF EUROPE SECRETARY GENERAL

Baku, 24 November,(AzerTAj)“Democracy succeeds in Azerbaijan thanks to President Ilham Aliyev,” the Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis said in his interview he gave at the “Solidarity Day” fair held at the COE headquarters on 22 November.

Noting he will attend the meeting of the COE member countries` ministers of culture
forthcoming in early December in Baku, Mr. Davis said he has visited Azerbaijan
several times. He expressed pleasure with these visits, during which, according to
him, he could learn much about the republic, but regretted that due to time limit he
could not thoroughly acquaint with the rich culture and history of Azerbaijan. He
said he would at this time visit the country’s museums, historical monuments, to
enlarge his knowledge about this land.
Terry Davis said: “I am deeply interested in culture of Azerbaijan. I hope I will
certainly visit the Museum with monuments in facade erected to outstanding
personalities.”
Mr. Terry Davis gave high assessment to the policy of national minorities pursued in
Azerbaijan. He especially underlined this question noting that the Organization he
supervises pays particular attention to this issue, and called on the states not to
let discrimination in this field.
The COE Secretary General emphasized Heydar Aliyev`s huge contribution to the
progress and prosperity of the Republic.
Touching upon the October 15 presidential elections Mr. Terry Davis said they were
democratic and fair. “I was certain that Ilham Aliyev will be re-elected for the
second term, as he holds his promises deservedly and serves his nation worthily. It
is thanks to President Ilham Aliyev that democracy has succeeded in the republic,”
he stressed.
