Hamdan Bin Zayed to launch 2009 Humanitarian Appeal

Abu Dhabi, Nov 24, 2008 (WAM) - Today, 24th November 2008, UAE Deputy Prime Minister HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in cooperation with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, will launch the UN's 2009 Humanitarian Appeal asking the world countries to mobilise their efforts to help millions of human beings, who suffer from conflicts, warfare and natural disasters.

Representing the United Nations system at the event will be António Guterres, the High Commissioner for Refugees and ex- Prime Minister of Portugal.

The traditional launch is simultaneously made at the United Nations office in Geneva.

UN's Consolidated Appeals Process, (CAP) to evoke action from various corners of the world to protect humanity from natural and man-made calamities is an annual event since 1991, but it is the first time the international body launches its appeal from the Middle East.

The launch of the 2009 Humanitarian Appeal is seen as recognition to the role being shouldered by the UAE in alleviating the sufferings of the victims of various conflicts and natural disasters across the globe.

The Consolidated Appeal will be launched from 12 countries around the world. But the 2009 Humanitarian Appeal is considered the largest so far as it aims to raise USD 7bn to alleviate the immediate sufferings of over 30 million people who need life saving assistance around the world.

John Holmes, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator said earlier in a statement: 'The first event of its kind in this region, this is an excellent initiative to raise awareness of the Humanitarian Appeal, with the ultimate objective of providing the best possible assistance to people whose lives have been affected by conflict and calamity,'.

The UNHCR representative in the United Arab Emirates, Saado Quol, said: 'We are grateful to the UAE for all of the support that it has extended to our programmes in the previous years. We look forward to expanding this strategic partnership and enhancing our mutual future cooperation in the humanitarian arena.

The organising committee of 2009 Humanitarian Appeal hopes that a large number of people working in the field of philanthropy will attend the launching ceremony tomorrow evening at the Sheraton-Corniche.
