YR 17.5 billion in loans and donations to improve education in 2007

SANA'A, Nov. 23 (Saba) - Foreign loans and donations Yemen received
during the last year to support and improve education reached YR
17.5 billion, a governmental report said.

The report, which was issued by the Supreme Council for Educational
Planning, said the sum included YR 10.3 billion Yemen received as
loans from Arab and western countries and YR 7.2 billion as
donations from donors.

The sum represented 3.1 percent of the total proportion allocated
for education.

The report noted that most of the sum was used for general
education, with YR 8.4 billion.

However, the Technical Education and Vocational Training got YR 5.6
billion, while the rest of the sum was used for the higher education.

The report, however, noted that allocations for the higher education
were restricted to finance capital equipment such as constructing
buildings and class rooms as well as building up capacity of higher
education institutions.
