A'LIA, RI COOPERATION IN NATURAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT
Lima, Peru, Nov 23 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Australia had agreed to cooperate in handling natural disasters under one of the subjects discussed at the 16th APEC leaders summit in Lima, Peru.
The agreement reached in a bilateral meeting was announced by President Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in a press conference at Hotel Melia here Saturday, or Sunday in Jakarta local time.
"We have agreed to place on a solid footing the cooperation on natural disasters handling facilities between Indonesia and Australia effective as of April next year," said President Yudhoyono.
These facilities will help Indonesia and other countries in the region reduce damage caused by natural disasters as well as enhance their capacity to manage the disasters through trainings, risk estimations, disaster susceptibility, research and analysis on regional basis.
"The facilities are worth A$67 million, or nearly US$42 million for five years," said the president.
"The cooperation was reached at the right time, and will be followed by a meeting next June, 2009, because while we have so far survived in many disasters, there are still a lot of shortcomings, besides the need for coordination, prevention, and disaster damage reduction," he said.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said these facilities will enhance the development of a wider and more effective disaster management techniques, including joint trainings prior to speed up cooperation among military and civil institutions in planning.
