AGRICULTURE MINISTRY PROVIDES OVER 220,000 TONS OF RICE SEEDLINGS
Jakarta, Nov 23 (ANTARA) - The Agriculture Ministry provides more than 220 thousand tons of rice seedlings for the 2008/2009 planting season (October-March).
The food crop director general at the ministry of agriculture Sutarto Alimoeso said that the 220,373.52 tons of seedlings consist of 121,667.06 tons of certified seedlings and 98,706.46 thousand tons of non-certified seedlings from the farmers.
"The certified seeds are provided by the government and the free market, subsidized or not," he said.
He said that to meet the projected rice planting on 7.79 hectares, in the October 2008-March 2009 period, 194,823.23 tons of rice seedlings would be needed.
Thus, during that period the seedlings will reach a surpus of 25,594.77 tonss, or 13.11 percent of the demand.
With regard to the 2008/2009 planting season, he said the rice planting in December 2008 will cover 2.20 million ha, with the potential seedling requirement of 55,080.88 tons, and the seedling stock reached 61,139.77 tons.
In January 2009 the coverage will reach 1.55 million ha with potential seedlings needed reaching 38,795.68 tons, and 43,839.11 tons of seedling stocks.
In November 2008 it is estimated that the potential seedling requirement may reach 33,650.60 tons for the planting of 1.34 million ha, with a seedling stock of 37,688.67 tons.
Meanwhile in March 2009 the potential seedling requirement may reach to 33,886.98 tons for 1.03 million ha, with 31,064.34 tons of stock.
The rest is for October and February with the planting of less than one million hectares respectively.
"The available rice seedling varietiesy are Ciherang, IR 64. Cigeulis, Ciliwung, Cobogo and some others," he said.
