Shiraz influential in world civilization: Asian mayors
Tehran, Nov 22, IRNA
A number mayors of Asian capitals and major cities has described
Shiraz as the cradle of Iran's civilization and admired the role of
its literary, scientific and religious elites in human civilization.
The mayors who visited Tehran to attend the Asian Mayors Conference
toured Takht-e Jamhsid (Persepolis) and the tomb of Hafez, noted
Iranian poet.
Lebanon's Baalbek Mayor Bassan Ra'd told IRNA that Shiraz's ancient
civilization has automatically established a cultural relation with
other Asian countries.
Iran and Lebanon have numerous cultural and ethical commonalities,
paving the way for their affable ties, he said.
Spirit for fighting arrogance is another common feature of the
nations, who have learned from Imam Khomeini, the late founder of
Islamic Revolution, Ra'd noted.
Damascus Mayor Feisal Sorour also said that Shiraz is a reminder of
the eternal nature of Persian literature and poetry.
The ancient city is of higher significance for the Syrians in view of
its religious status, he said.
Meanwhile, Qods Mayor Seyyed Zaki al-Ghoul said that the city played a
crucial role in promoting science because it boasted of noted
scientists, poets, scholars and philosophers.
It was also effective in development of Islam, he noted.
Asian cities' mayors are currently in Iran to attend the conference of
Asian Mayors which opened on November 19 in Tehran and continued in
Shiraz on November 22.
