Doha, Nov 23, 2008 (WAM) - President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan attended yesterday evening the inauguration of Islamic Art Museum by Emir of Qatar His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

The event was attended by a number of heads of states, culture ministers and Islamic art enthusiasts.

Sheikh Khalifa arrived earlier in Doha, leading a high ranking delegation on a visit to Qatar.

The delegation accompanying Sheikh Khalifa includes H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Deputy Ruler, Lt. General H.H. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Interior Minister, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, H.E. Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Culture, Youth '&' Community Development, H.E. Ahmed Juma Al Zaabi, Deputy Minister of Presidential Affairs and Abdul Redha Abdullah Khouri, UAE Ambassador to Qatar.

Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad al Thani, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Qatar Museums Authority delivered a speech at the outset of the inauguration ceremony of the Museum of Islamic Art in which she welcomed the Emir of Qatar and heads of states attending the event.

"As chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Qatar Museums Authority, I have learned many lessons important to me and to the people of my generation. When asked by my father H.H. the Emir of Qatar to lead the Board of Trustees of the museums of this country, I knew from the start that this directive would be an honour but it also would be a task that required much effort. As I become involved with these projects, I realized that the vision of H.H. exceeds His mandate and honour, becoming a thought but interesting task as well. It included challenges and important lessons to me, as a representative of my generation of Arab youth," she said.

Qatar News Agency quoted Sheikha Al Mayassa as saying the museum will also convey the beauty of Islamic culture to a world that has dealt with Islam and its civilization subjectively.

"We also hope the Museum of Islamic Art will offer scholars and researchers from Qatar and around the Muslim world opportunities to study various aspects of Islamic art. This museum is an invitation to Muslims to look at Islamic civilization and to see its originality presented through a variety of Islamic Arts, which reflect Qatar's pride as a nation that is rich in Islamic cultural heritage." "The Museum of Islamic Art is the fruit of the efforts of many, to whom I wish to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude. I thank the members of the Board of Trustees of the Qatar Museums Authority for their commitment and hard work - and I ask them to stand for a round of applause. I would also like to thank all of the staff of the Museum of Islamic Art and members of the Organizing Committee for their hard work and dedication - and I would also like to ask them to stand for applause." Sheikh Hamad, accompanied by Sheikh Khalifa and other dignitaries, unveiled the Museum's plaque and toured its different sections.

At the end of the tour, Sheikh Khalifa congratulated Sheikh Hamad and the Qatari people on opening the museum.

"The museum, with its rare exhibits depicting rich Islamic history, will serve as a cultural centre for all countries of the region. It is an important addition to the treasures of Arab and Islamic civilisations," Sheikh Khalifa said.

He thanked Sheikh Hamad for his invitation and wished the Qatari people further progress and prosperity.

"This auspicious event provides an opportunity for the countries of the region to further strengthen their cultural ties and to reflect the bright picture of our Islamic civilisation."
