Malegaon blast: Chaturvedi in police custody till Dec 3
Mumbai/Bangalore, Nov 21 (PTI) A special court here Friday remanded Malegaon blast accused Sudhakar Chaturvedi to the custody of Mumbai ATS till December 3, a day after the tough Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) law was invoked against him and nine others arrested in the case.
In a related development, Dayanand Pandey, one of the
accused in the case, was subjected to narco analysis test at
the Forensic Science Laboratory in Bangalore.
Seeking the custody of Chaturvedi, national coordinator
of Hindu right wing group Abhinav Bharat, Special Public
Prosecutor Rohini Salian told the court that Lt Col Srikant
Prasad Purohit, another accused in the case, revealed during
his narco test that Chaturvedi was in constant touch with the
army officer in arranging meetings among the arrested persons
in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Therefore, Chaturvedi's interrogation was necessary,
she said.
Opposing his custody, defence lawyer Naveen Chomal said
Chaturvedi has been "falsely implicated" in the case and there
is no evidence against him.
He said Chaturvedi is going to be tortured for
extracting a confessional statement.
Earlier in the day, Chaturvedi was produced in a Nashik
court which the Anti-Terrorism Squad to take him to the MCOCA
court in Mumbai.
Nine other accused in Malegaon blast case, including
Purohhit and sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, will be produced
before the MCOCA court on November 24.
In Bangalore, Dayanand Pandey underwent a narco
analysis test, becoming the fourth accused to be sujected to
the scientific test. Purohit and Ramesh Upadhayay were
subjected to narco here on November 10 while Chaturvedi on
November 18.
"Pandey was subjected to the narco analysis test for about
four hours", Forensic Science Laboratory sources told PTI.
FSL is yet to decide whether to subject Pandey to other
tests like polygraph and brain mapping, they said.
Purohit Friday made a written submission in a court in
Pune alleging the ATS threatened to eliminate him in an
encounter and tried to extract confession from his under
duress.
Purohit, remanded in 14-day judicial custody by
Magistrate G G Italekar in a 2003 case of alleged forgery in
procuring an arms license for one Milind Date in Pune from
Jammu and Kashmir, penned his grievances after the judge asked
him whether he had any complaints regarding his two-day police
remand which expired Friday.
"I have no complaints against Pune police. But I want
to submit in writing my grievances," he said. Purohit's
advocate Srikant Shivde told the court that the accused did
not want to air his grievances in an open court and would
prefer to put them in writing.
The contents of Purohit's written submission were
informed by his lawyer to the media afterwards.
Shivde told mediapersons that in the written
submission to the court, Purohit has given details of the
"pressure and physical and mental torture" he was subjected to
by Mumbai ATS which tried to "extract confession forcibly"
from his in regard to involvement in the blast.
Purohit also complaint of an "encounter" threat to
