LAW ENFORCEMENT AGAINST CORRUPTION NOT YET OPTIMAL : POLICE CHIEF

Jakarta, Nov 21 (ANTARA) - National Poilce Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri has admitted that efforts to enforce the law in fighting corruption in the country were not yet maximal due to various factors related to the ways in which laws were implemented and to people's culture.

"But at least we have to be grateful that with the improvements that have been made in the legal framework, the strong commitment that has evolved, and the anticipatory measures that have been taken, concrete results have already been achieved," the police chief said here on Friday.

Danuri made the remarks in his address at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the State Audit Board (BPK) and the National Police (Polri).

He said the number of corruption cases the police had handled and passed on to public prosecutors' offices in 2008 reached 78 with the financial loosses they caused to the state estimated at a total of Rp198 billion.

"But the state money that was recovered amounted to Rp4 billion only," he added.

The number of corruption cases handled by police in 2008 was smaller than in 2007 when the figure was 92 that had caused the state to lose an estimated Rp170 billion of which Rp15 billion was eventually recovered.
