MINISTRY HOPES WORLD NOT PROVOKED BY PROPHET MUHAMMAD CARTOONS

Jakarta, Nov 21 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Fiazasyah has expressed hope that the world community will not be provoked by the appearance of cartoon comics depicting the Prophet Muhammad in the website http://lapotuak.wordpresscom.

"We hope the world community will not be provoked by the appearance of the cartoon comics. So far, reaction has come mostly from the site's domestic visitors," Fiarsyah said here on Friday.

He said there were not many reactions from outside Indonesia but he did not explain the parties who had reacted to the blasphemous cartoons.

"Police are now investigating the case, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not interfered in the matter," he said.

Previously, Communications and Informatics Minister Muhammad Nuh said that his side would investigate the website which insulted the Prophet Muhammad.

He said the government would take firm action against whoever had disseminated provocative and pornographic materials through websites which had caused anger and unrest in the public.

"The regulations we have now affect freedom of expression, and electronic transactions , the criminal code, a ban on dissemination of business or SARA (ethnically, religiously, racially sensitive) materials.

"If something is banned, it means that there will be a legal consequence," the minister said.
