PRESIDENT HOPES RI TO EXPORT CREATIVE PRODUCTS TO BRAZIL
Rio de Janeiro, Nov 21 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has expressed hope that an Indonesia-Brazil partnership will offer a chance to Indonesia to export its creative products to the Latin American country.
"When we showed them how to produce 'batik' cloth, they were impressed and wished to know more about it. Therefore, I have ordered the ambassador and the cabinet secretary to discuss this matter with the chamber of commerce (Kadin), relevant ministers, batik businessmen and designers," the president told the press here before leaving Brazil for Peru on Thursday (Friday in Indonesia).
The president said Indonesia would therefore be able to export its batik products to big cities in Brazil such as Sao Paolo which organizes a big-scale fashion show each year.
"It would be such a good thing if we could penetrate the market here and thereby broaden our overseas market," President Yudhoyono said.
He said that if Indonesian batik had begun to enter the Brazilian market, other Indonesian handicraft products could follow suit and thus Indonesia's creative products could become a new economic source and be exported to more markets.
"We have to be proactive. Ambassadors should serve as opportunity seekers so that we can penetrate more markets. Our hope is that we can diversify our export markets. I don't know exactly whether our handicraft products and furniture can be marketed here," he said.
In the agricultural sector, the president said he wanted to learn a lesson from Brazil.
"The agricultural ministers of both nations have held talks. I have also invited a number of Brazil's agricultural research institutions to cooperate with Indonesian counterparts. Our people consume tofu and soybean cake (tempe) on a large scale. Our average soybean production is only about 1.5 ton per hectare. We want to increase it to 2.5 tons a hectare," he said.
President Yudhoyono had been on a visit to Brazil since November 18, 2008 to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
From Brazil the president is to go to Lima, Peru, to attend the 16th meeting of APEC on November 23, 2008.
