RI, M'SIA DISCUSS IMPROVEMENT OF COMMON BORDERS' MANAGEMENT

Jakarta, Nov 21 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Malaysia are again discussing efforts to improve the management of their common borders at a high-level meeting of their General Border Committee (GBC) here on Friday.

The Indonesian delegation to the closed-door meeting, the GBC's 26th to date, is led by Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Commander General Djoko Santoso and the Malaysian delegation by Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) Commander General Tan Sri Abdul Azis.

Santoso told reporters, the meeting would discuss various issues affecting the management of the two countries' borders on land as well as in the seas, in its defense, security and socio-economic aspects.

"All aspects will be discussed, including education and joint exercises between the two countries' armed forces," he said.

He said the issue of both land and sea border security would again be discussed further in the meeting including joint patrols by the two countries' armed forces.

He said the two countries had also agreed to add another joint post to the existing posts on the Indonesian side of their 2,004-kilometer-long land border in Kalimantan (Borneo).

"At present there are only two joint posts in Indonesia and three in Malaysia. The new joint posts will be set up in Aruk," he said.

To improve land border security, Indonesia and Malaysia have renovated a number of security posts on the land border between the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan and the Malaysian state of Sabah as well as between the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan and the Malaysian state of Sarawak.

"Regarding our common sea borders, we have agreed to formulate a permanent procedure which will be signed at the 37th GBC meeting in 2009," he said.
