VP ORDERS N SUMATRA GOVERNOR TO HAVE TOLL ROAD CONSTRUCTED

Medan, Nov 21 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has ordered North Sumatra Governor Syamsul Arifin to have a toll road to Kuala Namu new airport constructed in Deli Serdang district.

"If there is no outside party who would like to construct the toll road the Kuala Namu new airport in Deli Serdang district, gather the local investors to build it," the vice president told Governor Syamsul Arifin here on Friday.

Kalla made the order when he inspected the construction project of Kuala Namu new airport to replace the existing Polonia airport in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra.

Earlier in the day, the governor reported to Kalla that there were no investors who would like to build the 15-kilometer toll road from Tanjung Morawa to Kuala Namu because it was not feasible.

"The investors want to build a toll road as far as 60 kilometers to Tebing Tinggi, because according to them it is not feasible if it only up to Kuala Namu. Therefore we are at present making a deal and hopefully it will be realized soon," the governor reported to the vice president.

Responding to Governor Syamsul Arifin report, the vice president said ordered him to gather local businessmen and ask them to construct the toll road themselves.

"It is not impossible that the people of Medan are unable to construct toll road. Even the people of Makassar can do it. Here in Medan you have a lot of businessmen in the palm oil sector. Gather them and try to find Rp1 trillion to build the road and the rest Rp2 trillion can be acquirred through credit," Kalla said.

The vice president added that if North Sumatra needed a consultant, he would order PT Jasa Marga to help find one.

Kalla was in North Sumatra on Friday to inspect the construction of Kuala Namu new airport in the province.

On the occasion, the vice president was accompanied by among others Transportation Minister Jusman Syarei Djamal, Public Works Minister Joko Kirmanto, State Minister/Chairperson of National Development Planning Board Paskah Suzetta, State Minister of State Enterprises Sofyan Djalil, and a number of other related officials.
