RI, M'SIA AGREE TO REDUCE VIOLATIONS OF TERRITORIAL WATERS

Jakarta, Nov 21 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Malaysia agreed to reduce border violations in the two countries' waters particularly in the disputed area like Ambalat.

This was one of the results of the 6th high level meeting of the Malaysia-Indonesia General Border Committee (BGC) here on Friday.

"We have agreed to formulate a permanent procedure for security patrol in the two countries' common border particularly in the eastern region," Indonesian chief delegate to the meeting defense forces commander General Djoko Santoso said to ANTARA.

The procedure was needed so that patrols that were carried out by the two countries' armed forces would not violate the agreement.

"In a sea territory which is still under dispute, patrols will be done without entering the territory. So, each side must inform the other about their coordinate through a communication channel on an agreed frequency before conducting patrols," he said.

In the meeting the two parties agreed that the procedure could be signed at the 37th GBC meeting in 2009.

Some time ago representatives from the Indonesian Eastern Fleet Command and the Malayasian 2nd Naval Command Region had met to discuss technical issues.

Indonesia and Malaysia shared both land and sea borders. They have common land borders in Kalimantan and sea borders in the Malacca Strait, the South China Sea and the Sulawesi Sea.

Indonesia along with Malaysia and Singapore have already had a coordinated Malsindo patrol cooperation in the Malacca Strait and also the "Eye in the Sky" air joint patrol cooperation.

Indonesia and Malaysia have not yet reached an agreement regarding the Exclusive Economic Zone in the northern part of the Malacca Strait and in the South China Sea.

The two countries also have not had an agreement regarding continental shelves and territorial boundary and the Exclusive Economic Zone in the Sulawesi Sea.

Malaysian armed forces commander General Tan Sri Abdul Azis meanwhile said to ANTARA that Malaysia was always ready to open a communication forum to discuss any problem arising in land as well as sea borders.

"All cooperation agreements that have been made for the two countries' border security have been implemented well. To improve both land and sea border security we are now intensifying discussions," he said.
