Iran stresses need for change in UN structure
United Nations, Nov 20, IRNA
Need for change in general structure of United Nations in order to
make the international body competent in answering the needs and
concerns of present day global community was stressed by Iran's
representative at UN General Assembly here Tuesday.
The Director General of the IRI Ministry of Foreign Affairs
International Political Affairs reflected Tehran's viewpoints at the
session of the UN General Assembly convened to survey past year
activities' report of the Security Council.
According to Wednesday report of the IRNA correspondent at UN New York
Headquarters, Seyyed Mohammad Reza Sajjadi in his comments while
pointing out the need for making efforts aimed at preserving the
transparency, accountability, and neutrality of the Security Council,
said, "Although an absolute majority of the UN members are demanding
reforms in the professional approaches and the process of decision
making at the Security Council, unfortunately no serious and effective
measure has still been adopted in that respect and some of the
measures adopted there have mainly been aimed at changing the facades,
never been sufficient in addressing the real demands."
Sajjadi said, "The Security Council still keeps on ignoring some of
the most important matters that are serious threats against the
international peace and security."
He referred to the Security Council's total indifference towards the
Zionist regime's numerous crimes committed against the Palestinian
nation, arguing, "Under such conditions that even the UN affiliated
bodies, such as the UNRWA, too, describe the Zionist regime's crimes
against the Palestinians as inhumane, barbarian, and shameless, the
Security Council still remains indifferent towards those horrendous
acts, which are beyond doubt the most serious threat against
international peace and security."
Our country's representative at the session meanwhile referred to the
Security Council's interference in the realms of the
responsibilities of the other UN bodies, including those of the
General Assembly, the ECOSAC, and the IAEA, as other sources of
serious concern for the international community.
He added, "Imposing the task of surveying the peaceful nuclear program
of the Islamic Republic of Iran by some permanent members of the
Security Council to that council was among the most obvious and
unjustifiable cases of the Security Council's interference in the
responsibilities of the other UN organs, that had roots in biassed and
politically motivated viewpoints of a few certain countries, contrary
to the soul and text of the UN Charter."
He added, "During the course of the past year alone, the Security
Council resorted to new unjustifiable and unjust moves against the
peaceful nuclear program of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and that was
under such conditions that Tehran's nuclear policy has been totally
peaceful and by no means within the range of the
responsibilities of the Security Council. Therefore, the moves made by
that council have been totally baseless and unjustifiable." Elsewhere
in his remarks, Sajjadi referred to the Security Council's lack of
respect for the rights of the UN members, setting examples and
reiterating, "Due to the existence of such countless deficiencies and
problems, the decisions and conduct of the UN Security Council has not
only not been the manifestation of the viewpoints of the international
community, but not even been the reflection of the viewpoints of the
Majority of the Security Council members."
The Director General of our country's Foreign Ministry's International
Political Affairs ended his address arguing, "We believe reforming the
structure of the Security Council would be possible only ter solving
those problems in addition to finding an effective solution for the
problem of insufficient presence of the developing and Muslim
countries at the Security Council."
