PALEMBANG PREPARES ITSELF TO BE AN INT'L CITY

Palembang, South Sumatera, Nov 19 (ANTARA) - Mayor of Palembang city, Eddy Santana Putra, said here Wednesday that his administration kept trying to upgrade several supporting local facilities to develop Palembang into international city.

"All facilities including transportation, Internet services, and tourism objects, which will support this aspiration is being upgraded," he said after a meeting with a special team from the Palembang city administration.

According to Eddy, learning inputs from experts will help expediting the development of Palembang into an international city.

Meanwhile, chairman of the city's expert team, Bakri Umar, said that some facilities need to be provided, especially the use of bilingual signs (Indonesian and English) in some public places such as airports, and seaports, and places of worship.

The team also recommended that the local govenment take stock of public facilities which could serve as an example for icons of an international city so that the maintenance and preparations for facilities should meet international standards.

Bakri explained that an international standard hospital was also an important facility to prevent people for going abroad for medical treatment.

Furthermore, education was also an urgent matter to make Palembang an international city. Therefore, Bakri and his team recommended the establishment of more international standard schools in Palembang.

In the meantime, Chairman of the Palembang Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), DR Hilda Zulkifli, said that in recent time, her office would hold a workshop which would discuss steps to make Palembang an international city.

"The workshop will have participants from the relevant different institutions in the city so that we will share the same vision and mission," she said.
