Period of voter roll revision, rectification not to be extended

SANA'A, Nov. 19 (Saba) - Head of the Technical Division at the Supreme Commission for Elections and Referendum Muhammad al-Sayaghi has said that the period of voter roll revision and rectification would not be extended, particularly at the centers
where the two processes have been crumbled.

Quoted by the state-run 26sep.net al-Sayaghi urged those who are eligible and new to
head to electoral registration centers before the processes period ends on November
26.

By law that identifies the processes of voter roll revision and amendment to be held
every two years, those who miss registering their names now would not be able to do
so except after two years, he said.

Regarding the blocked centers, al-Sayaghi said the rate of the centers fell from 5
percent to 3 percent, pointing out that most problems hindering the job of the
electoral field committees were tribe- motivated ones and caused by poor awareness
of the people at these centers as they placed conditions on the SCER.

These people placed conditions on the SCER including their demanding to provide
service projects, a new administrative division in return they allow committees
accomplish their duties.

Furthermore, among the problems affecting the two processes were tribal border
disputes, disagreement over the distribution of electoral committees, demanding to
get these areas' people into job, offering compensations and releasing jailed
persons, those added to inciting calls by political powers, he added.

But he noted that all these problems don't stand as a crumbling block before the
work of the committees since the SCER used to deal with such difficulties, pointing
out that the commission along with the local authorities are making efforts to
resolve the problems at the blocked centers to allow people exercise their
democratic rights.

Boycott is a right, but doesn't mean to have the right to prevent others from
participating and registering their names at the voter lists, because such thing is
illegal and considered a democratic crime, al-Sayaghi said.

On the number of who have already registered their names, al-Sayaghi made clear that
this number reached 570.000 new voters so far last Tuesday, with 80.000 voters a
day.

Turnout was as projected and is run according to statistic studies, he added.
