RI WINS FIVE GOLD MEDALS IN ASEAN SKILLS COMPETITION
Kuala Lumpur, Nov. 19 (ANTARA) - Indonesia has won five gold medals in the Seventh Asean Skills Competition (ASC) held in Kuala Lumpur from Nov. 12 to 16, 2008.
The country's achievement was down from last year's ASC when it bagged seven gold medals in 15 skill categories.
"We apologize for not being able to meet the target of winning over 7 gold medals. We only eon five gold medals in 19 skill categories," Abdul Wahab Bangkona, head of the Indonesian team, said here on Wednesday.
Indonesia got the gold medals in the following skill categories : ladies' dress making (won by I Nyoman Bayu), bricklaying (by Edi Suwiknyo), web design (by Krisna Rengga Buana), graphic design (by Heri Kurniawan, and cabinet making (by Mohamad Abidin).
The ASC winners have been offered post-graduate scholarships by the education ministry, or internship programs in Japan by the manpower ministry.
In addition to the gold medals, the 38-member Indonesian team also won five silver medals in the categories of electronic industry, restaurant services, CADD (computer aided drawing & design), and cooking.
Several bronze medals were also won by the Indonesian team, namely for CADD, graphic design, software application, and automobile technology.
The 8th ASC will be held in Thailand in 2009.
