VP OPENS INDO AEROSPACE 2008
Jakarta, Nov 19 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla officially opened a civilian and military air show dubbed Indo Defense and Indo Aerospace 2008 at the Halim Perdanakusuma airport here on Wednesday.
On the occasion, the vice president was accompanied by Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono, National Defense Forces (TNI) chief Gen. Djoko Santoso, and a number of United Indonesia Cabinet ministers.
Also present at the opening ceremony were a number of defense and military officials from Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, South Africa, France, The Philippines, Czech Republic, Italy, South Korea, Bulgaria, The Netherlands, Timor Leste, Turkey, and Thailand.
The Indo Defese and Indo Aerospace 2008 is participated in by at least 337 companies from 37 countries, including 11 pavilions of Singapore, Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Germany, Poland, South Korea, The Netherlands, The United States, Bulgaria, and Britain.
In this year's air show, a number of aircraft and helicopters such as CN-235 maritime reconnaissance (MPA) planes, Bell and NBO helicopters produced by PT Dirgantara Indonesia, would be displayed.
PT Pindad would also display some 150 armored vehicles which were ordered by the government.
The opening ceremony of the air show was also marked by a solo aerobatic exercise by an F-5E Tiger from the Indonesian Air Force's Air Squadron 14 stationed at Iswahjudi military airbase.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said the biennial air show this time was a reflection of the national awakening era.
"This show is also intended to encourage the achievement of national self-reliance in the provision of defense equipment and facilities," the defense minister said.
