HOUSE SPEAKER TO BECOME APA CHAIRMAN

Jakarta, Nov 19 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono will be installed as Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) chairman at the 3rd APA meeting here on November 27-29, 2008.

DPR's Inter-parliamentarian Cooperation Board (BKSAP) chairman Abdillah Toha said here on Wednesday that the 3rd APA conference would be participated in by 250 delegates from 39 countries in Asia.

He said APA chairmanship would last for a year, and the APA meeting this year would focus on Asia's preparedness for and role in overcoming the global financial crisis.

The participants of the conference would also discuss the role of every Asian country in stepping up poverty eradication efforts, exchange parliamentary codes of ethics, and matters relating to preservation of natual resources.

APA is a regional organization of Asian countries' parliaments. At present it has 39 member countries that meet once a year. It has 17 parliament experts and 2 international organizations.

APA is originally from Association of Asian Parliamentary for Peace and Cooperation (AAPC) which then changed to Association of Asian Parliamentary for Peace (AAPP) which was approved in 1999 in Bangladesh.

The formation of AAPP was initiated by the Bangladeshi Parliament and supported by the Philippines, Iran, and Indonesia.

At the 7th meeting of AAPP in Tehran in 2006, AAPP was transformed into APA. To date, APA has held two meetings in Tehran in 2006 and 2007.

In its second meeting in 2007, Indonesia was appointed to host the third meeting on November 27-29, 2008.

The theme of this year's APA meeting is "Asia and the need for a new global financial architecture."
The theme would be the central issue of a general debate which is expected to be attended by Coordinating Minister for Economy Sri Mulyani Indrawati.

The third APA conference would be opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at Legislative Nusantara-IV building, and then all sessions would be conducted at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).
