RI TO HOST THIRD ASIAN PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY CONFERENCE
Jakarta, Nov 19 (ANTARA) - Indonesia will host the third conference of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) here on November 23-29 this year.
The speaker of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) Agung Laksono said here on Wednesday the APA conference is to be participated in by parliamentarians from 39 countries.
This year's APA conference would give priority to efforts to strengthen the role of Asian countries in dealing with the global financial crisis. "Many countries in other regions hope that they could play a better role in overcoming the crisis," Laksono said.
Parliaments in Asian countries are in a position to increase their role in dealing with the financial crisis, he said, and therefore, this year's APA meeting was of great significance to APA member countries.
Laksono said the commitment of Asian countries to playing a greater role in overcomig the global crisis would be made in a Jakarta declaration to be issued by the conference.
The meeting was also designed to strengthen the relations among Asian countries.
Inhabited by some 2.5 billion people, Asia was a densely populated part of the world with a high potential for conclicts, he said.
In the meantime, the secretary general of the House of Representatives, Nining Indra Saleh, said the APA conference will be opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Jakarta Convention hall in Jakarta.
"We continue to coordinate with the foreign ministry, communication ministry and the security agencies ," Nining said.
It is for that purpose, Chairman of the inter-parliamentary Cooperation Board of the House Abdillah Toha said the APA conference would adopt 15 resolutions on many issues, including efforts to deal with global financial crisis, poverty eradication and nature conservation.
The conference's organization was to cost Rp7 billion which was required to cover expenditures like rental of the conference's venue, interpreters, air tickets, accommodation for participants, food and others.
"The cost is to borne by the host country," Toha said adding the budget would spent efficiently.
