Gov't to help local firms win Russian APEC construction orders

By Lee Joon-seung
SEOUL, Nov. 19 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean government said Wednesday that it
will provide assistance to local companies vying to win construction orders for
the 2012 APEC summit to take place near Vladivostok, Russia.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy said at a project conference and consultation
session in southern Seoul that participation by local companies in the US$12
billion building plan could further strengthen bilateral economic ties.
"Building the vast infrastructure needed to host the annual gathering will cement
the strategic partnership agreed upon by the two leaders in late September," the
ministry in charge of commerce and trade said.
Seoul set up a cooperation center for Far East and Siberian development two
months ago, while Moscow has designated Russky Island, located several kilometers
off Vladivostok, as the site for the APEC summit meeting of Asian-Pacific
leaders.
Kwon Tae-kyun, head of the ministry's trade investment office, said that based on
South Korea's successful experience hosting the 2005 Busan APEC meeting, local
companies could contribute to building necessary facilities.
The ministry said that Seoul will actively help the 100 South Korean companies
that have expressed interest in building infrastructure secure deals by providing
timely information and arranging meetings with Russian authorities.
Russia said that state funds are to be injected to build up the port city on the
East Sea as a center for international cooperation, and pledged to pass special
laws that could ease foreign participation in construction areas.
The infrastructure and facilities needed include a bridge linking the port with
Russky Island, a convention center and hotels.
In addition, local companies said that securing a deal to modernize the regional
airport and opera house, as well as update communications and utilities, could
lay an important foundation for expansion into the resource-rich Russian Far
East.
