Coordinator hails Vietnam's activities for women
Hanoi (VNA) - The UN's Resident Coordinator in Vietnam John Hendra has
praised the Vietnam Women's Union for the recent delivery of 800,000
signatures it had collected to the United Nations Development Fund for Women
(UNIFEM), in response to the Campaign to End Violence against Women.
The UN official hailed the activity as an indication of the Vietnamese
government's commitment to the field and the results of the country's firm
actions to ensure gender equality.
Hendra made these remarks at the launch of the UNIFEM' s Biennial Global
Report on Progress of the World's Women 2008/09 and a report on the progress
of the region towards the millennium development goals, in Hanoi on Nov. 18.
Deputy Minister of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Huynh Thi Nhan
stressed that Vietnamese women have played a massive role in the
socio-economic development of the nation, particularly in the fight against
poverty, to make the country a leading light in the field.
Sharing Deputy Minister Nhan's view, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Women's Union
Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa also confirmed that a host of policies are currently
being carried out to promote the roles of women in the country's success.
The Vietnamese officials spoke of the Vietnam National Assembly's adoption
of the Gender Equality Law and the Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and
Control, creating a legal corridor for the settlement of issues related to
gender inequality and domestic violence towards women.
According to the UN coordinator, the global report on the progress of the
world's women 2008/09 and the report highlighting the meeting of millennium
development goals in the region are important documents, helping to maintain
and increase the necessary investment resources to promote gender equality
activities and improve the status of women in the region.-Enditem
