Co-founder of IM Sadiq Sheikh sent to 14 days police custody

New Delhi, Nov 18 (PTI) Mohd Sadiq Sheikh, an alleged co-founder of Indian Mujahideen, was Tuesday remanded to 14 days police custody by a Delhi Court to allow them to investigate his alleged role in September 19 serial blasts here.

Sheikh, who was arrested by the Mumbai police, was
brought here by the Delhi Police from Ahmedabad.

He was produced before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate
Kaveri Baweja who sent him to custodial interrogation till
December one.

Seeking a 14-day police custody of the accused, Special
Public Prosecutor Rajeev Mohan submitted that Sheikh come
under the scanner in connection with the serial blasts here,
that claimed 26 lives and injured several others, following
interrogation of five suspects who had already been arrested
in the case.

"His name has come up in the interrogation of five
accused. He used to pass information through electronic
gadgets. We have to interrogate him on the role of four of his
associates," Mohan said, adding, that the accused was also to
be taken to Bangalore and Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh for
investigations.

According to the police it was Sheikh who used to send
electronic messages to news organisations claiming
responsibility for blasts on behalf of Indian Mujahideen.

The accused was arrested by the Mumbai police under
various provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention)
Act, Information Technology Act and the Prevention of Damage
to Public Property Act.

"Considering the nature of allegations against the
accused and the submissions that he is to be taken to
Bangalore and Azamgarh to investigate the role of co-accused
in the case, he is remanded to police custody till December
one," CMM Baweja said.

Sheikh was arrested by the Special Cell in the blast case
registered with the Connaught Place police station here after
being brought here from Ahmedabad.

With Sheikh's arrest, the number of accused in custody
for allegedly being involved in the serial blasts here have
gone up to six.

Five Delhi serial blasts accused -- Mohd Saif, Zeeshan,
Zia-ur Rehman, Saquib Nissar and Shakeel -- were handed over
to Gujarat police on October 27 for their alleged involvement
in the July 26 serial blasts in Ahmedabad.

According to the police, Sheikh, a native of Azamgarh,
had visited Pakistan in 2004 and received nine months'
training in handling arms and explosives in camps organised by
Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Saif was arrested in the serial blasts here following the
Batla House encounter in Jamia Nagar in south Delhi on
September 19 while Zeeshan was apprehended on the same evening
from Jhandewalan area in Central Delhi.

The other three accused -- Shakeel, Zia-ur-Rehman and
Saquib -- were nabbed from Shaheen Bagh here on September
