INDONESIA READY TO EXPORT RICE: BULOG

Pontianak, Indonesia (ANTARA) - Indonesia has the competitive edge to export rice in 2008, President Director of State Logistics Agency (Bulog), Mustafa Abubakar said.

"Indonesia is ready to export rice next year if its rice production increases by five percent," Abubakar said after the inauguration of the new building of Bank Bukopin here on Tuesday.
He said that the production target for 2009 was 63 million tons of unhulled rice or equivalent to 40 million tons rice, while the domestic need is only 33 million tons of rice a year.
"So, rice stocks will remain safe even if Indonesia exports one to 1.5 million tons," he said.
He said that Malaysia, the Philippines and Brunei Darussalam were among countries now on the 'waiting list'.
The Bulog chief said that the target of Indonesia's exports is neighboring countries. "We also aim our rice exports at countries already left by Vietnam."
Indonesia has the chance to earn US$500 million from the exports of one million tons of rice.
Meanwhile, Bulog director for public services Abdul Waris said the state logistics agency had up to November this year purchased 2.72 million tons of rice,
Bulog's procurement was still dominated by rice while its purchase of unhulled rice was recorded at 375,152 tons only, he said here Monday.
Waris said that rice huller businessmen who partnered Bulog in the procurement of domestic rice considered selling rice in hulled form to be more efficient and profitable than selling it in unhulled form.
