WORLD TOURISM GROWTH PREDICTED TO DECLINE
Jakarta, Nov 17 (ANTARA) - The United Nations World Tourism Organizations (UN-WTO) has predicted that global tourism growth will decline.
"Because the global financial crisis is predicted to continue until 2009, the UN-WTO predicted the global tourism growth rate reach only 0 to 2 percent," an expert staff member of the Cultural and Tourism Ministry, Thamrin B Bachri, said by phone on Monday.
Representing Indonesia, Bachri participated in the International Conference on Revitalization of Tourism and Confronting Crisis in Chengdu, Sichuan province, China, at the initiative of the UN-WTO and CNTA (China National Tourism Administration) from November 15 to 19, 2008.
Bachri also said according to the UN-WTO, the percentage of global tourism visits in the first four months of 2008 has reached 5.7 percent.
"In fact, in May 2008, the demand dropped by 7 percent. However, in June, July and August the growth rate dropped by 2 percent bringing the the average growth rate in the world in the first eight months of 2008 to 3.7 percent," he said.
The UN-WTO predicted that world tourism growth would slow down 2 to 3 percent until December 2008.
At the international conference, said Bachri, there are several important results which need to be followed up by Indonesia, namely that tourism development needs to be viewed from two aspects.
The government needs to optimize tourism positive impacts by increasing the number of domestic and foreign tourists as well as minimizing the negative impacts of tourism by preparing programs in anticipation of the impact on global warming by the tourism sector.
"The interest of people and their involvement still get a priority in whatever crisis condition," Bachri said.
The UN-WTO urges all its member countries to carry out the agendas related to global warming and tourism growth which are based on the people's involvemnet eventhough the tourism sector is predicted to get the impact of the global financial crisis, said Bachri.
The International Conference on Revitalization of Tourism and Confronting Crisis is being held from November 15 to 19 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China.
The conference is participated in by 400 delegates from 31 countries and international organizations like the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), as well as institutions like universities and tourist industries.
The conference is designed for a better understanding on the current global crisis.
At that conference, Indonesia was appointed host of the 5th UN-WTO International Conference on Tourism Statistics. The conference was previously held in Ottawa, Canada 1990, in France in 1999, in Vancouver, Canada in 2001 and in Igauzu, Argentina in 2005.
