HUMPUSS DROPS PLAN TO BUY TWO SHIPS
Jakarta, Nov 17 (ANTARA) - Publicly-listed shipping company PT Humpuss Intermoda Transportasi has dropped its plan to buy two Japanese-made Panamax ships worth US$170 million due to low demand for sea transport services.
The tight liquidity triggered by the current global financial crisis had led to low demand for sea transport services, the company's president director, Agus Darjanto, said on Monday.
"Many cargo ships are idle now," he said.
In addition, ship rental tariffs also plunged to US$7,000 a day from US$40,000 a day previously, he said.
The cancellation would not harm the company's interest because it was not subject to cancellation fees, he said.
He said the company would later deposit the funds in banks.
In return for the cancellation, the company would hire a number of ships to strengthen its fleet, he said.
