DOMESTIC FLIGHT PASSENGERS RECORDED AT 23 MILLION

Jakarta, Nov 17 (ANTARA) - The Transportation Ministry has announced that the number of domestic flight passengers up to September this year reached 23 million only.

"If last year, the number of domestic flight passengers was recorded at 39 million, it is estimated that the number of domestic passengers this year would drop," Air Transportation Director Tri Sunoko said here on Sunday.
Sunoko did not disclose his estimate on the number of reduction in domestic flight passengers. In the last decade, the number of domestic passengers had enjoyed an average increase of 20 percent.
"We think the drop in the passengers was caused by the increase in the world crude price which reached over US$100 a barrel where passengers had to bear a fuel surcharge burden," he said.
He was neither able to predict the number of domestic passengers in the fourth quarter of this year.
"Although the crude price has dropped, the value of the dollar against the rupiah is firming up. This is a difficult thing because the airlines mostly use foreign currencies in their expenditures," he added.
He said that his side had set a target of a 10 percent increase in domestic flights during the recent post-fasting month Idul Fitri festivities. But in reality, it was minus 17 percent compared with last year's.
