S KOREA TO BUILD FODDER FACTORY, PURCHASE MAIZE IN S SULAWESI

Makassar, S Sulawesi, Nov 16 (ANTARA) - South Korea's International Resources Energy Development (IRED) is planning to build a fodder factory in Gowa district, South Sulawesi, and to buy about one million tons of local people's maize product annually, South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo said.

"The South Korean investor has asked for about one million tons of maize annually for the need of its factory. We hope we would fulfill it," the governor said here on Saturday.
He said that the South Korean company wanted to buy one million tons of local farmers' maize because it had not cultivated yet its own plantation areas covering 15,000 hectares in Gowa district.
In the meantime, the governor said, the factory it was building was expected to be operational in the coming six months.
"This is a good chance for the maize farmers in South Sulawesi to expand their plantation areas and increase their production," he said.
He said that South Sulawesi's maize production in 2009 was estimated at 3 million tons with a plantation area of 100 thousand hectares.
With the three million tons, South Sulawesi's maize production is surplus about 1.5 million tons. "If the company purchases one million tons for its fodder factory, we will still have 500 tons of stocks," he added.
