JOINT RI-AUSTRALIA SEA PATROL SHOULD NOT FRIGHTEN FISHERMEN
Kupang, Nov 16 (ANTARA) - A joint marine patrol and training between the Indonesian Navy and Royal Australian Navy to be held on November 17 to 24 is expected not to have an Australian covert agenda to frighten Indonesian traditional fishermen in the Timor Sea.
"Principally, we support the bilateral cooperation between the two countries in defense and security. But we also hope that Australia has no clendestine agenda to frighten Indonesian traditional fishemen," Director of the West Timor Care Foundation Ferdi Tanoni said here on Sunday.
The cooperation in the Timor Sea is aimed to overcome transnational crimes like human trafficking, terrorist attacks, and piracy by a third country.
The Timor Sea territorial sea including the Ashmore reef, according to Tanoni, was regarded as the second home of traditional fishermen for hundreds of years after they went out fishing.
"By understanding this condition, we hope that the joint training and patrol should not carried out as a cover to defend its territory and to frighten Indonesian traditional fishermen not to go fishing in the Timor Sea," he said.
