MALAYSIA HUNTING FOR ANCIENT MANUSCRIPTS IN RIAU ISLANDS

Tanjungpinang, Riau, Nov 16 (ANTARA) - Malaysia is hunting for ancient manuscripts kept in Riau Islands, said a local cultural observer Raja Malik, here Sunday.
"Malaysian collectors often hunt for Malay's ancient manuscripts on Penyengat island, Tanjungpinang and Lingga" said Raja Malik who also chairman of the Riau Islands Malay Cultural Heritage Center for Penyengat Island.
He said that around 50 historical, literature, and religion manuscripts have been sold to Malaysian collectors.
Some Riau Islands' Malay ancient scripts are being kept in the Singapore cultural institute.
"Most Malaysian collectors bought the ancient scripts from locals who kept them," he said.
Some ancient scripts are kept by the heirs, who are Penyengat island locals.
"We are not questioning about ancient scripts which are kept by their heirs. The government should be responsible for rescuing them," he said.
Raja Malik said that the Malaysian and Singaporean collectors always tried to persuade the ancient script holders.
Collectors have their own offers on ancient script sold by the locals.
Ancient history manuscript valued higher than literatures and religion scripts.
"We managed to safeguard 317 ancient manuscripts," said Raja who has been awarded for rescuing Malay cultural assets on Riau Islands from the cultural and tourism minister.
He said that until now no inventory list had been made on the Riau Islands' cultural assets, so that the remaining manuscripts are still unknown.
The government should provide a museum so that the remaining Riau Islands' cultural assets could be preserved.
"The government has bought some ancient manuscripts kept by their heirs. However the effort is still minimum one, because it is estimated that the number of ancient manuscripts kept by their heirs is big," he said.
The government's attention nowadays is only focused on the maintenance of the king's tombs, castles and the Penyegant island mosque.
"We hope that the government will preserve all types of Riau Islands' cultural assets which show the Malay cultural richness," he said.
